Title : Effectiveness of duration of CIDR application on reproductive performance of postpartum anestrous dairy cows Material Type: printed text Authors: G. Gautam, Author ; B. B. Ratna, Author ; A. K. Sah, Author ; B. N. Devkota, Author Publication Date: 2020 Article on page: 145-150 p. Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Duration comparison, estrus expression, pregnancy, vaginal electrical resistance Abstract: This study was done to compare the effectiveness of duration of Controlled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) application on
reproductive performance of postpartum anestrous dairy cows while applying CIDR-PG protocols. Cows (n=19) in a large
commercial dairy farm in Chitwan, Nepal that were not detected in estrus at least until 60 days postpartum were selected
and divided randomly into two treatment groups. The CIDR device containing 1.9 g progesterone was placed into the vagina
of cows for seven days (7-day group, n=10) and for 11 days (11-day group, n=9). One day before the removal of CIDR, all
the cows were treated with PGF2 alpha analogue (Cloprostenol 500 µg). Vaginal electrical resistance (VER) was measured
at 48 hours after CIDR removal. Cows were observed for estrus signs at least three times a day starting from the day of
CIDR removal until five days after that, and those detected in estrus were artificially inseminated (AI) according to am/pm
rule. Pregnancy was diagnosed 60 days after AI using trans-rectal palpation and ultra-sonography. Overall estrus expression
and pregnancy rates were 73.7% and 52.6%, respectively. Estrus expression rate within five days after CIDR removal was
higher (p There was no effect of Body Conditioning Score (BCS), breed, ovarian status before treatment on estrus expression rate and
pregnancy outcome. There was a tendency (p cows. Moreover, the pregnancy rate tended to be higher in cows with high VER than in cows with low VER. In conclusion,
while applying CIDR-PG protocol, application of CIDR for 7 days was more effective than for 11 days on inducing estrus in
postpartum anestrous cows while pregnancy rate was not different between two CIDR application durations.Link for e-copy: https://afu.edu.np/jafu

Title : Husbandry practice, health, productive and reproductive status of lulu cattle in Mustang, Nepal Material Type: printed text Authors: G. Gautam, Author ; P. B. Oli, Author Publication Date: 2022 Article on page: 197-202 p. Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Indigenous cattle, endoparasitic infection, body condition score, calving season Abstract: Lulu is the only indigenous cattle of taurine (Bos taurus) breed that is reared in northern part of central to western
Nepal. There have been no recent studies on husbandry practice, health status, productive and reproductive
performance of Lulu cattle in Nepal. Therefore, this study was conducted to know the husbandry practice, health,
productive and reproductive status of Lulu cattle in Mustang district. Household survey was conducted in Lulu
cattle rearing households (n=183) in Mustang; fecal sample of Lulu cow was collected from each household
and examined for endoparasitic infection. Body condition score (BCS), hair coat, anemic and milk production
status were recorded only from lactating cows (n=242). All of the respondents kept their cows in loose housing
system. Among them, 90.2% grazed their cattle, 21.3% provided some cultivated pastures, 3.3% supplemented
commercial feed and none of the farmers fed mineral supplementation to their cattle. All the milk produced was
used only for home consumption. Only 22% of respondents dewormed their cattle regularly and 29% never
dewormed; only 12% vaccinated against foot and mouth disease (FMD) every year and 25% never vaccinated.
Cattle of 79.8% households had endoparasitic infection. Among 242 lactating cows, 13.2% cows had poor BCS
( the history of abortion. Mean (±SD) peak milk yield and lactation length were 2.01±0.30 liter/day and 9.84±0.86
months, respectively. Most of the cows calved in summer (72%) followed by autumn (12%), spring (11%) and
winter (5%). Mean (±SD) age of first calving, calving to conception interval, inter-calving interval, dry period and
the number of services per conception were 36.0±0.48 months, 3.99±0.68 months, 12.97±1.34 months, 2.71±0.45
months, and 1.47±0.77, respectively. In conclusion, Lulu cattle has the potentiality to increase its productive and
reproductive performance through improved health and husbandry practices.Link for e-copy: https://afu.edu.np/sites/default/files/Husbandry_practice_health_productive_and_ [...]

Title : Nutritional parameters in relation to reproductive performance in anestrus chauri (Yak hybrid) cattle around Jiri, Dolakha Material Type: printed text Authors: B. P. Gautam, Author ; B. Devkota, Author ; R. C. Sapkota, Author ; G. Gautam, Author ; S. K. Shah, Author Publication Date: 2018 Article on page: 165-169 p. Languages : English (eng) Keywords: BCS, chauri, pregnancy, vitamin-mineral supplementation Abstract: Anestrus Chauri (Yak hybrid) cattle raised in Jiri area of Dolakha district, Nepal were selected to
investigate the status of blood nutritional parameters in relation to their reproductive performance
during active breeding months. Blood samples were collected from 20 (13 pregnant and 7 nonpregnant) anestrus Chauries to estimate nutritional parameters in serum, and body condition score
(BCS) of each animal was recorded. The non-pregnant anestrus Chauries were supplemented with
vitamin-mineral mixture for two months followed by second blood sampling and BCS recording.
The response of supplementation was evaluated in terms of estrus, fertile mating and pregnancy. Four
out of 7 (57%) non-pregnant anestrus Chauries responded to the vitamin-mineral supplementation to
produce pregnancy. Statistical analysis revealed that level of blood glucose, total cholesterol, calcium
and phosphorus were not significantly different between pregnant and non-pregnant anestrus Chauries
while the level of serum total protein was significantly higher in pregnant than in non-pregnant
Chauries. BCS of pregnant and non-pregnant Chauries differed significantly (p conception was observed in Chauries with BCS greater than 3.0. When compared with the levels
of blood nutritional parameters before supplementation, higher level (p cholesterol and calcium were observed after vitamin-mineral supplementation. In conclusion, blood
nutritional parameters and BCS indicate the reproductive performance in Chauries, and vitaminmineral supplementation in non-pregnant Chauries helps in achieving pregnancy.Link for e-copy: https://afu.edu.np/sites/default/files/Nutritional_parameters_in_relation_to_rep [...]

Devkota, Author ; S. Thapaliya, Author Publication Date: 2017 Article on page: 119-128 p. Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Endoparasitic infection anestrus poultry disease Abstract: A retrospective study was done to determine last two years case flow pattern at Veterinary
Teaching Hospital (VTH) of Agriculture and Forestry University. Registered cases of fiscal year
(FY) 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 were categorized and analyzed using appropriate tools. Total
cases during this period decreased drastically compared with the earlier case flow of 15-20 years
ago. Species wise, poultry cases were highest in number, and category-wise, fecal examination
was highest. Prevalence of endoparasitic infection was higher during rainy than during winter
season (P was higher during spring than during rainy season. Collibacillosis was highest among all poultry
diseases. There was a clear trend that the prevalence of colibacillosis was highest during winter
(39%) and lowest during autumn (14%), while the highest prevalence of mycotoxicity was during
autumn (23%) and rainy season (22%), and that of IBD was recorded during spring season.Link for e-copy: https://afu.edu.np/sites/default/files/Recent_case_flow_pattern_in_Veterinary_Te [...]
